Inspired by the Muses
Our office sits between two of the loveliest streets in New Orleans: St. Charles and Prytania. More interestingly, we're also right in the middle of a cluster of streets named for the Muses. There are nine. Can you name them?
A ShoutOut: Agencies Online
Agencies Online, our bedrock partner, represents a cornucopia of insurance agencies across North America. All told, we've created and currently maintain over fifty websites for their clients, with no signs of stopping anytime soon. From small family-owned firms in the rural Midwest to high-powered organizations in New York, and nearly everything between, we've just about seen it all. At this point, we can practically do it in our sleep.
How We Automated Time Tracking and Billing
At 3Coasts, like most geeks, we're obsessed with efficiency. Everyone here can play their computer like a piano, and are always trying to streamline our processes. It's so ingrained as to almost be unconscious. But one thing we've never quite been able to hit a bullseye on was our time tracking. Many web professionals have to track most everything they do for invoicing and productivity purposes, and we're no exception.
Table Cellpadding and CSS Resets
With the proliferation of various CSS resetting techniques (eg: reset.css and the like), there is a big problem among those who still require and use HTML tables. Most reset css includes something like:
Adding Borders Without Increasing Box Size
To add a border to an element with CSS, you sometimes need to do it without increasing the size of the element. One way of doing this is using the CSS outline property, which does exactly that.
Social Media Aggregator
We continue to develop the NOLA for Life campaign with the brilliant folks at Spike DDB and GMC+Advertising--in the past month we added a very nifty custom social media aggregator to the site. It compiles all social media activity from around the web related to NOLA for Life, then displays it as though in a digital quilt. It was initially developed in Drupal 7, using the features module to create the necessary content types, views, and blocks.
New Junior Team Member
We’re delighted to announce an addition to the Three Coasts team: George Burgess Berlin. He was born on Monday, October 29, the same birthday of our fearless leader, Brian--cause for a very happy double-birthday indeed. He is presently in training as a junior executive under the tutelage of his brother John (pictured left), and may be reached at extension 104. Speculation abounds as to whether the Berlin family plans on having more children, and if so, whether they will continue to bear the names of Beatles. Coincidence? You decide.
The Mobile Web
Most of this month was spent bringing many of our clients’ sites into the very recent future by making them responsive. Responsive design is the cutting edge of the web today—many developers and designers we speak to don’t even know what it is! If the 1990s represented the advent of the web itself, and the 2000s the era of the social web, this decade is looking like it will represent the flowering of the mobile web. It’s an exciting time.
Adding Conditional Styles with Omega Theme
Looking for a way to easily add conditional stylesheets to an omega theme, which we currently use for new development. Of course nothing is more than a couple quick Google queries away, and this was no different. It's something I'll be using a lot, so I'm putting it here so I can remember it.
Responsive Design with Inline Media Queries
I have to convert some pre-existing sites to responsive designs. After doing it the wrong way a few times, I've got a couple snippets that'll make the whole thing a lot easier. First of all, since we're working from a pre-existing site, we're not really gonna be able to do this mobile-first. Well, we could, but it would require a bit more work. These need to be as quick as possible. That's why we're not doing any fancy resizing of images or anything, we're just scaling down the full sized image.
